What’s a CSA?

csa share

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. These programs are an excellent way to support farmers, enjoy the local harvest and sometimes even get introduced to new foods. Members receive a weekly or biweekly share of the garden’s bounty. As the season progresses, the contents of the box change. If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with plentiful and varied produce (like I do), a CSA program might be right for you and your family.

The most valuable part of being a member of a CSA is that your box contents are always fresh. And when I mean fresh, I mean picked and packed. Some items may have been growing only hours before pick up. Many CSA programs feature pesticide free and/or organic items. But sometimes members can be overwhelmed with all the goodies. Don’t be afraid to experiment and get creative! Enter the name of a veggie you’re struggling with in the search field and you may find an idea or recipe that works for you.

I belonged to the Meadow Lynn Market Garden CSA program before starting a large garden of my own. Although I don’t get to visit the farm every week any more, I still get support and info from Sarah. Check out their website at https://www.meadowlynnmarket.com

Here’s one of my weekly shares:

This was October, 2018. A great selection of fall fruits and veggies. AND….some honey collected at the farm!

If you belong to a CSA program and need some inspiration, check out the CSA section in the side menu for recipes made with ingredients found in my weekly shares.
